Tamasha is a film by the Indian director, Nagesh Kukunoor. It is about an inter-caste love story between two men, played by SRK and Zayed Khan. As the protagonist of the film enters adulthood, he encounters problems with both his family and society at large. The subject matter of caste privilege in India makes Tamasha controversial; some critics claim that it glamorizes the status quo while others say it's an accurate portrayal of reality. The movie has received critical acclaim for its theme on social issues like identity struggles and personal relationships between people from different backgrounds. The film begins with a young man, Venu (Zayed Khan) meeting his childhood friend, Madhu (Shah Rukh Khan). Venu tells Madhu about his recent breakup with Nisha (Genelia D'Souza), the girl he wants to marry. The plot takes place in New Delhi. Venu comes from the region of 'Vyshya', which is considered as an underprivileged caste in most parts of India. His father runs a construction company and lives in a palatial home with his family. Venu is studying mechanical engineering at University of Delhi and dreams of starting his own construction business one day (alluding to the family business). His elder brother, Rajiv lives happily with his wife, Kavita (Rati Agnihotri) and is also an avid golfer. His sister, Usha comes to visit the family with her husband, Bobby (Saqib Saleem). Venu is very close to his sister and loves her dearly. He even helps her out financially by getting money from his parents. Venu gets along well with his father but has very little interaction with his mother who spends most of time in the "Chaupal" (a prayer room for women outside the house). The men are allowed to enter the room occasionally but are forbidden to speak to their wives if they are menstruating. It is made clear that women are not to be spoken to during their periods. Venu is very much aware of this and decides not to speak to his mother at all during her "Muhurat" (time of menstruation). Venu gets a visit from a childhood friend who comes with a girl, Nisha. Venu meets Nisha and is immediately smitten by her. He always tries to impress her but she never reciprocates. They end up breaking up, as she believes that he cannot be faithful to her as he has been away from home for a couple of years already. Vennu's sister ends up getting pregnant and she has twins: Meena and Yashwant. She wants to abort the babies but Venu wants her to keep them. At that point, his elder brother Rajiv marries Kavita and they go on holiday. Meanwhile, Meena gets very ill and is put in the ICU. She ends up getting better after some time but ends up losing her memory of her childhood which upsets everyone including Venu. Venu's parents decide to take him out for a vacation with them on their boat during their summer vacation. While they are out on the cruise, he has an accident on the boat and loses his memory completely.
